The Issue

After a power outage in my home lab I found that my vCenter server would no longer boot. An error in the console stated that there were issues with the file system and the System Check could not be started. Sounds pretty bad and I did wonder if I was going to have to reinstall and start again, but no! Thankfully there was a resolution.

The Resolution

  1. Reboot the vCenter appliance
  2. When you get to the splash/boot screen, press e on the keyboard
  3. On the line that starts with the word linx append the following to the end of the line
    • fsck.repair=yes
  4. Press F10 to reboot
  5. The filesystem should automatically repair itself and vCenter will boot up properly
